I think if Hitchen's was alive, we would have enjoyed this article. "You need to be genuinely entertaining. And end your bits with ‘Waka waka" is some of the best advice I've ever heard. I think if I don't mention that I'm the first person to comment I'll lose my Internet licence. New Girl Rocks.

Hi Amy,

This is a really interesting topic. A student I was tutoring last year wrote her issues analysis on this very issue, making heavy reference to Christopher Hitchens' article. The idea that women aren't funny is really pervasive in our society, and I believe that it comes back to the old public/private sphere issue. Women in comedy are literally putting women and "women's issues" in the spotlight- somewhere that is considered space for MEN and MEN'S concerns. "Women's issues" such as childbirth, the female anatomy etc etc are thought of as only OK to be discussed in the private space of the home, and it is called vulgar if a woman wants to talk about these things openly.

As for the idea that women rely on their looks... That is a double edged sword. Women don't get any attention paid to them if they aren't thought of as 'beautiful.' Yet, if they pay attention to their looks, then they are cast aside as "stupid", "vain" and "reliant on their beauty".

That's just my two cents' worth.

how can you you disregard a legitimate qualifications that is wanted by every mining company and manufacturing company in australia as being stuck in a rut? some people only want to look at the negative side of things. how many of my class mates who went to uni 5 years ago have owned sports car, own two houses, fair amounts of shares and earn more money than some people who just do a degree as an excuse to study for another 4 years. i guess it has alot to do with peoples perspectives. if you are from the outside looking in you really do have absolutely no idea.

Hi Barry,
First of all, thanks for the feedback! The 10 University Commandments article was one of our favourites too. As for the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film review, we apologise for letting such a large error go unnoticed. Within the first few days of uploading it to the website, we fixed the problem (apart from the excerpt, which I embarrassingly just noticed I forgot to change), however it was too late for the hard copy version as it had already been sent to the printers. Hopefully you continue reading, and we would love to hear more of your feedback for our upcoming issues.

I picked up the Feb. issue to read yesterday and was pleased to see a couple of my ex-students featured as contributors. Interesting articles-the 10 University Commandments is a hoot. However, I cannot praise the appalling review of David Fincher's Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.Apart from being a very trite account of the movie, where on earth did the reviewer get the information that the film is based on "David Fincher's novel" when it is in fact the first book in Stieg Larsson's multi-million selling Millenium Trilogy??? The reviewer does admit to being untrained and unskilled but a little research could help in addressing those shortcomings.

I don't think meals have business being deductible. I'm for separation of calories and corporations.
A lot more doubt, mumble; much more trouble, delegate; much more charge, ponder.
